Reading Disabilities Headaches Neck Pain and Asthma with Chiropractic
Posted: Feb 16, 2012 • By: Dr Charles Pray •
Published in the September 2010 issue of the Journal of Chiropractic Medicine, is a case study documenting the improvement with chiropractic, of a young boy suffering from headaches, neck pain, asthma, and reading disabilities. In this case the 10-year-old boy was a poor reader and suffered eye strain while reading. He also exhibited poor memory of classroom material, and was unable to move easily from one line of text to another during reading. The case documented that he was taking 4 medications for the asthma but still suffered problems during exercise.
This elementary school student was brought to the chiropractor with a history of neck pain and headaches for the previous 3 years. Using a numeric pain scale the young boy drew out a pain scale where he rated his pain at 5 out of 10 for both his neck pain and headaches. When asked how many days per week he suffered from headaches, he responded by reporting having headaches 3 or 4 days per week.

Subluxations over time leads to Degeneration of the spine
Posted: Feb 16, 2012 • By: Dr Charles Pray •
Understanding the ongoing process of subluxation and ethe effect time plays on the subluxated spine.
This is a representation of one type of subluxation. A subluxation, as defined by the Association of Chiropractic Colleges is: "A subluxation is a complex of functional and/or structural and/or pathological articular changes that compromise neural integrity and may influence organ system function and general health." When a subluxation occurs it causes nerve interference in some portion of the body affected by those nerves. The subluxation causes changes to the structure as well as the nerves. These changes get progressively worse as time is allowed to work on the subluxated area of the spine. These changes take the form of ongoing degeneration known as "subluxation degeneration". By understanding the type and amount of changes, it is possible to reasonably estimate the time subluxations have been present in a spine. Having this information is useful in understanding the time and effort needed for correction.

Facial Spasms Neck & Low Back Pain Helped
Posted: Jan 9, 2012 • By: Dr Charles Pray •
A case study published in the August 15, 2011 issue of the Journal of Upper Cervical Chiropractic Research documents the improvement with chiropractic care, of a patient suffering with chronic hemifacial spasm, neck pain, and low back pain.
The author of the study explains that hemifacial spasm is a rare condition characterized by irregular clonic twitching of the muscles. The National Institute of Neurological Disorders and Stroke describe it as "Hemifacial spasm is a neuromuscular disorder characterized by frequent involuntary contractions (spasms) of the muscles on one side (hemi-) of the face (facial)." Medical treatment recommendations include injections of botulinum toxin into the affected areas, or surgery.
In this case a 48-year-old male presented with left hemifacial spasms that he had been suffering with for the past year. In addition, he was also experiencing significant neck pain. The facial spasms were causing his left eye to blink or even completely close at times. He reported that his neurologist had tried to treat his problems with Botox injections, but these only gave short term help. Additionally, he also reported a chronic, off-and-on lower back pain of moderate intensity.

Feeling sick? Cold or Flu got you down?

The immune system is what gets you well and keeps you well. This God-given defense mechanism is made up of organs that create white blood cells. These white blood cells are used in the body to destroy anything that does not belong inside of you. When the organs of the immune system are healthy and functioning maximally, you can be exposed to high levels of disease causing organisms without getting sick. This is why you can be around someone who is sick and not get ill. "If the immune system is strong, cancer cells are destroyed before any damage is done. However, new cancer cells develop in our bodies every day. If your immune system weakens too much, that's when cancer can establish itself." -Dr. Michael Williams
Sniffles, sneezes and fever are good for you! They clear the airways of harmful irritants and allergy causing substances. Fevers actually fight viruses and bacteria. If a fever isn't over 104 degrees, diseases are shortened by letting the fever run its course. Coughing rids the body of bacteria by way of the lungs. If you take fever reducing drugs or cough suppressants you can be weakening the immune system from running its course therefore getting sick more often and for longer periods of time.
How to keep your immune system strong to get well and stay well:
#1. Get adjusted- The first step to healing is to get your spine and nervous system checked for interference (subluxation). When you are experiencing symptoms, your first tendency is to stay home and skip your adjustment. You should actually get your spine checked more often when you're sick! "Nerve fibers go to virtually every organ of the immune system. We found that if you took the nerves away from the spleen or lymph nodes (organs of the immune system), you virtually stopped immune responses in their tracks." -Dr. David Feltoen, MD, PhD, University of Rochester.
2. Good Nutrition- Proper nutrition consisting of lots of fruits and vegetables, leans meats, fish and supplementation all support the body in the healing process. Poor food choices like sugar, caffeine, refined carbohydrates and too much red meat all rob the body of energy that your immune system needs.
3. Exercise- has been proven to increase your immune system function to the point where male and female cancers can be reduced by 50-80%.
4. Enough Rest- Stress and lack of sleep drain strength from your immune system and are often responsible for the reason you get sick. Getting a good 6-8 hours of sleep a night is essential.
5. Positive Mental Attitude- We see that the patients that have positive attitudes about their treatments and life in general get the best results. Negative attitudes cause stress which depletes your immune system and prevents proper healing. The next time you feel stressed...read a good book, meditate or be around someone who makes you laugh to turn that frown upside down!

Shoulder Pain and How Chiropractic Can Help
Posted: Dec 23, 2011 • By: Dr Charles Pray •
Erase your pain with chiropractic!
Does your sore shoulder make getting into a coat sleeve difficult? Do you dread lifting a jug of juice out of the refrigerator? Do you have difficulty sleeping because of your bad shoulder? Chiropractic can eliminate your shoulder pain!
A painful shoulder can make life miserable! Anything that keeps you from enjoying your work and your family needs to be taken care of. Yet, shoulder pain is often dismissed as a “touch of bursitis” or “arthritis”. Typical treatments can include harmful pain-killers, rest and sometimes even surgery. Chiropractic can safely and effectively eliminate your shoulder pain without the use of drugs or invasive-surgery. Whether caused by an injury or wear and tear, shoulder pain can and needs to be dealt with.
Possible causes of shoulder pain:
-
Sports injury (pitching, throwing, tackling, swinging)
-
Car accident (especially whiplash)
-
Overuse and/or repetitive motions (lifting and reaching)
-
Arthritis (aging, normal wear and tear)
-
Old injury from childhood
-
Sleeping in an awkward position
-
Long-standing spinal or emotional stress
Your “intricate” shoulder
The anatomy of your shoulder makes it vulnerable to injury.
Your shoulder is a complex system of bones, muscles, ligaments, tendons, joins and nerves. These tissues are susceptible to injury and dysfunction, if not properly maintained. Your shoulder depends on thousands of intricate nerves and other tissues to help it function smoothly. No wonder shoulder injuries have ended so many athletic careers. Your shoulder is known as a “suspension” joint. This type of joint makes your shoulder very mobile and flexible. However, a “suspension” joint also limits the strength of your shoulder because it has a shallow socket and very little support. The anatomy of your shoulder makes it vulnerable to injury. Chiropractic care helps restore the strength and integrity of your shoulder’s supporting soft tissues, to keep your joints flexible and working pain-free.
Common Sources of shoulder pain
Most shoulder problems involve either overuse or underuse. The most common sources of shoulder pain include:
-Because the shoulder joint is closely connected to the spinal nerves in the neck, pain may radiate to your shoulder from inflamed nerve roots in your neck. Likewise, a shoulder disorder may cause pain in your neck and hands.
-Overuse of your shoulder by excessive lifting, reaching or repetitive action can inflame the bursa (fluid-filled “cushioning” sacs) and tendons of your shoulder, resulting in bursitis or tendinitis.Localized pain usually limits your shoulder’s mobility.
-One or more of the rotator cuff tendons (which hold your arm in place) can be inflamed or torn by injury. Pain and restricted movement often follow an injury to the rotator cuff tendons.
-When your shoulder is in pain, you may tend to avoid using it.This underuse can cause scar tissue develop, which can limit your shoulder’s mobility-until it suddenly “freezes”. The pain is often quite intense.Professional care to restore movement is essential to prevent further disability.
-Everyday wear and tear can lead to progressive damage of the bones, tendons and cartilage of your shoulder. Joint degeneration can cause the surfaces of two adjacent bones to rub together, causing chronic pain.
You can be injured, without getting “hurt”
Your shoulder joint “injury” may have resulted from accumulated joint stress, rather than from an accident or fall. Perhaps your pain and discomfort are related to an old forgotten injury that didn’t heal properly. Strains and sprains can result in continued injury to your joint, even after the pain is gone. Chiropractic can stop the progression of joint deterioration and help soft tissue injuries that don’t always appear on x-rays. Overuse of poorly conditioned tissues can leave your shoulder joint susceptible to injury. By keeping your soft tissues well-conditioned and your bones properly aligned, chiropractic can often prevent injury from occurring in the first place. If you “baby” your bad shoulder by not using it, you could be doing more harm than good. Lack of movement can lead to muscle atrophy, the development of scar tissue, and loss of elasticity in the supportive tissues of your shoulder. Prompt chiropractic care can reduce or even eliminate your chances of suffering from chronic joint pain and eventual disability.
Chiropractic care for your shoulder
Chiropractic care for your shoulder will depend on whether your condition is from a muscle, joint or nerve problem. We will examine your neck and upper back to see if spinal nerve irritation could be the source of your shoulder pain. A shoulder injury may even result from a weakness due to an underlying nerve irritation could be the source of your shoulder pain. A shoulder injury may even result from a weakness due to an underlying nerve irritation. Spinal and shoulder joint adjustments may be needed. I may also give you strengthening or stretching exercises to help restore full range of motion to your shoulder. Whatever your needs, give it time. Shoulder problems can be resistant to even the best of care. If you would like your “bad” shoulder to start feeling like a “good” shoulder again, make an appointment today and feel better now.

Put an end to “monthly” pain!
Do you dread the irritability, headaches, backaches, muscle tension, or cramping right before your period? NOW you can feel your best all month long! Many women have reported improvement from PMS (pre-menstrual syndrome) with chiropractic care. Painful periods, or primary dysmenorrhea, afflict over 50% of women. If you have painful periods, here’s how chiropractic can help you! The nerves that exit your spine are directly connected to your reproductive system. If you have a subluxation (spinal misalignment) irritating those nerves, you could be suffering needlessly from muscle cramping, joint stiffness and other PMS symptoms. Interrupted nerve flow can cause physical and emotional stress during your period- you already know how that takes a toll on every aspect of your life. Chiropractic offers a natural approach to managing the menstrual periods, without the use of drugs that can cause harmful side effects. A pilot study, published in the Journal of Manipulative and Physiological Therapeutics, found significant improvement from menstrual pain and distress among women who received chiropractic care. Chiropractic may put an end to your monthly pain-safely, effectively and naturally. At last! Results you can count on when you need it most!
Safe, gentle care for a healthy pregnancy
Pregnancy is a great time to seek chiropractic care. When you’re pregnant, your body undergoes dramatic structural and hormonal changes. These changes can affect your spine, nerves, ligaments, connective tissues and ultimately your entire body. Regular chiropractic care during your pregnancy can help you eliminate your aches and pains. Let us help you keep your body in top shape. One of the most common complaints among pregnant women is low back pain. In fact, one study showed that 56% of pregnant women suffer from back pain, especially between the 5th and 7th months. Pain-killers are not an option while you are pregnant because of their risk to your baby. Simply stated, chiropractic is a safe, drugless approach to ease back pain during your pregnancy. With gentle adjustments, chiropractic care can relieve your discomfort safely and effectively! And, regular chiropractic can even help back pain associated with delivery. A 1991 study of back pain during pregnancy and labor found that those women who received chiropractic care during pregnancy experienced less back pain while they were in labor. While chiropractic is not a substitute for regular visits to your OB/GYN, chiropractic should be a part of your overall health plan for a safe, comfortable pregnancy.
Finally! Freedom from stress & headaches
If you’re like most women today, you’re juggling family, work, and a busy social calendar. Do you suffer from anxiety, dizziness, neck pain, headaches, or back pain? Emotional and physical stress can lead to subluxation, or spinal misalignment. No matter what the source, muscle tension can place considerable stress on your musculoskeletal system. Chiropractic naturally soothes and releases tense muscles by keeping your nervous system free of interference. Stress reduction, regular chiropractic adjustments, proper exercise and nutrition and a positive attitude can help keep “stress” from making your life a “mess”! And when was the last time you woke up headache-free? Maybe you’ve been told that your headaches are something you have to learn to live with. With chiropractic, you don’t have to live with headaches. It’s estimated that 90% of migraine sufferers can benefit from a program of chiropractic care… Yet, only one in five migraine sufferers seek treatment. Chiropractic can remove the spinal stress that could be the cause of your headache pain-and help you feel better than ever!
Schwarzenegger and Ferrigno Note Importance of Chiropractic

On March 5 2011, in Columbus Ohio, the sports and fitness world shared a common interest in performance with the chiropractic world. It was on this day that the Arnold Classic Sports Festival was held along side the International Chiropractors Association (ICA) Sports and Fitness Symposium. The Arnold Classic brought thousands of athletes including the elite in fitness and bodybuilding. The ICA brought some of the best chiropractic experts on care for athletes and performance enhancement.
Celebrities were aplenty at these events but several stars made special appearances at the chiropractic event to specifically address the chiropractors. One such celebrity was Lou Ferrigno, an actor and former champion bodybuilder, who won the International Federation of Body Builders Mr. America title and two consecutive Mr. Universe titles. He spoke to the group of doctors and stated, "I have to say thanks to you because you people will help a lot of people, keep them from having surgery unless they have to have surgery". Ferrigno noted that he recently had to have his knee and hip joints replaced due to years of heavy training. He credited chiropractic for helping him recover and noted, "I need to have chiropractic once a month, or twice a month. Sometimes I go every week because I think it is very vital."

Maternal and Family Health that documents the case of a 6 year old girl who was helped with chiropractic after suffering with recurring acute ear aches, oral yeast infections, fatigue, and immune-system compromise.
According to this study, the young girl's history revealed that the ear infections occurred monthly and would occur after exposure to wind or water. This problem altered her activity to the point where she never went swimming and she would always wear a beret that covered her ears when she went outdoors.
The ear infections were so debilitating they caused the girl to lose her balance, walk into walls, and constantly cough. The recurring nature of the ear infections resulted in numerous trips to the medical doctor with 25 rounds of antibiotic therapy having been administered since she was 4 months old.
